Lawdragon editors recently spoke with Godwin Bowman Chairman and CEO Donald E. Godwin as part of its special “Lawyer Limelight” series which offers a personal look at the nation’s leading lawyers.
The in-depth profile, “Where Grit Meets the Gavel: Don Godwin’s Self-Made Path to Legal Legend Status,” explores Mr. Godwin’s humble business beginnings (as an 11-year-old in North Carolina “mowing lawns and delivering newspapers so his mother could quit her job as a maid”) and the conversation that changed his life path (he was bagging groceries at Winn-Dixie when a regional supervisor pulled him aside and told him “I think you ought to go to college”) to his maturation into one of the most respected, formidable and tenacious trial lawyers in the country.
“What I’ve achieved has always come from others believing in me. I believe God gave me the ability to recognize opportunity when it came and I tried to make the most of it. That’s my story. I think it’s part of what’s helped me connect with juries – not just in Texas, but all over – because I come from a background a lot like theirs,” said Mr. Godwin.
“I never aimed to be the guy for big, complex cases, but over time, people kept calling me when the stakes were high. I was fighting some of the biggest name plaintiff lawyers in the bar at that time and I developed a reputation of being able to hold up really well under pressure and with large numbers and high stakes. They trusted me to handle the pressure and get the job done.”
